Berber Fibulae – TIZERZAI – Antique Pair of Silver Berber Fibulae “TIZERZAI TAOUKA ” Morocco, Berber Fibulae, Moroccan Jewelry These garment brooches were used to fasten women’s wrap-around dresses at the shoulders. This complete set of brooches is flat and triangular, a type from the central Anti-Atlas Mountains. The triangle is a symbol of womanhood. What makes these brooches special is their ancient manufacturing technique: their surfaces consist of tiny silver tubes that were soldered together at their sides, placed upright, one tube to the other, in triangular silver frames. This is a very old technique, mainly practiced by Jewish silversmiths, most of whom emigrated from Morocco to Israel around 1900. In other regions, Berber silversmiths imitated these precious triangular brooches by punching and engraving the surfaces of entire, triangularly cut silver plates with numerous dots (without the tubes!). The rare brooches presented here each bear a red, set, angular glass stone on a round silver plate with blue enamel as their central decoration. The four connecting silver chains, each set in two strands, are decorated with two flat carnelian stones. The chains are connected at the bottom by an old silver ball with a circular decoration. A complete brooch set, made using a technique that has long since been discontinued. With old signs of wear, without significant damage. Very rare!
